Motion Required on ACS Court Case

A hearing was held August 19 on the Union's case against ACS for violating the intent of civil service law by laying off permanent social service employees while hiring new workers provisionally.  Judge Marcy Friedman has requested the Union file a motion, making a formal request for ACS to disclose information about those hired into the newly-created IOC titles.

Mott's Workers on Strike Against Corporate Greed

305 Mott’s workers in upstate New York have been on strike since May 23 over company demands to cut wages, reduce or eliminate pension benefits, and increase health care costs for workers.  The demands come at a time when Mott’s parent company, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc., has posted record profits of $555 million for the past year. 

Martin Fishgold, Editor of the Unionist, Dies

Martin Fishgold, editor of SSEU Local 371's newspaper, the Unionist, died on August 12 at age 70.  An active and outspoken labor journalist, Marty was editor of the Unionist for nearly three decades, garnering many awards for the newspaper and his work. 

Union Attends LCLAA Convention

The 18th biennial Labor Council for Latin American Advancement convention was attended by a contingent of Local 371 officers, members and staff August 3 through 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Led by Secretary-Treasurer Joe Nazario and Executive Vice President Yolanda Pumarejo, the Local 371 delegation attended workshops discussing immigration, green jobs, wage theft, and women’s issues, among others.
